Taking Part

What is CU Teach?

  • CU Teach is a collaborative program between the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education

  • CU Teach aims to prepare outstanding secondary mathematics and science teachers.

  • CU Teach is a four-year program that leads to a degree in a mathematics, sciences, or engineering major and a Colorado teaching license.

Getting Started in CU Teach: Taking the First Step

  • Students interested in CU Teach begin with two one-credit introductory "Step" classes.
  • Step I and Step 2 classes are offered every semester.
  • Step I and Step 2 provide opportunities and support to “try out” teaching.
  • In Step 1 and Step 2 you will conduct engaging science experiments and math lessons in local schools.
  • Step 1 and Step 2 are low-risk and low-commitment courses that introduce CU students to a streamlined secondary teacher education program in the sciences and mathematics called CU Teach.

  • No prerequisites are required for course registration and no commitment to completing teacher licensure is required upon course completion.

  • TO REGISTER FOR STEP 1 in FALL 2008:

    • EDUC 4800-001 Inquiry Approaches to Teaching. Call Number 84128.
    • Tues/Thurs 12:30 to 1:45  (Class meets one day/week on campus and also involves five visits to local school).

Coursework

  • The CU Teach program is a four-year degree/licensure program that allows students to complete a rigorous education in a mathematics or science major and fulfill the requirements for a Colorado initial teaching license in Secondary Mathematics or Secondary Science.
  • CU Teach courses will be phased in from Fall 2008 to Spring 2012.  Freshman starting in Fall of 2008 will be able to complete the full CU Teach program in four years.
  • Current sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students who have not taken any education courses:
    • We strongly encourage you to take the Step 1 and Step 2 courses and to apply to the current Secondary Math and Science Teacher Education Programs.
    • You will receive ongoing advising from CU Teach advisers  and can participate in all CU teach courses and other activities as they are phased in.

Support via Master Teachers

  • Master teachers are CU Boulder faculty members who are veteran teachers of grades 6-12. They teach courses and coordinate/support real-life teaching experiences for CU Teach students. Master teachers mentor CU Teach students from their entrance into the program to post graduation and are accessible to the students as a consistent source of support.

Support via Mentor Teachers

  • Mentor teachers are teachers currently teaching in K-12 schools who help CU Teach students with feedback on lesson planning, teaching strategies, classroom management and other important issues that teachers face in today’s classrooms.

Support via CU Teach Faculty

  • Faculty members from both the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education work closely with the CU Teach students. These faculty members all share an avid interest in K-12 education and discipline-specific educational research.

A Unique University Experience

  • CU Teach students form a close community in which they can share experiences of college life through many special university resources devoted to them. They continue to support each other after graduation through a network that is part of the CU-Teach new teacher induction program.

Scholarship and Internship Opportunities

  • CU Teach students may be eligible for a number of scholarships including Americorps and Noyce Fellowship. In addition, they have opportunities to complete paid internships in local nonprofit science and mathematics organizations.

After Graduation

  • CU Teach provides continued support for its graduates by offering face-to-face and/or online support through regularly scheduled professional development to help them overcome challenges in the classroom. This support extends through the School of Education's "Partners in Education" program and CU Teach.

Your Questions Answered...

  • What are the requirements to be a part of the CU Teach program?
In order to participate in CU Teach, you need to declare or plan to declare a math, science, or engineering major, and have an interest in exploring a career in teaching math or science at the K-12 level.

  • How do I join the CU Teach program?
Take the Step 1: Inquiry Approaches to Teaching course. This course is open to all undergraduates. This course offers undergraduates an opportunity to explore teaching science or mathematics as a career option.

In fall 2008, register for EDUC 4800-001 (call number 84128).

If you are a junior or senior student, the Step 1 and 2 courses allow you to fulfill the youth experience requirement for the current secondary math and science teacher education programs.

  • Can I take the Step 1 course without committing to the entire program?
Yes. You can sign up for the Step 1 course to explore the idea of teaching and to learn more about math and science education without having to commit to the whole program.
