CU Teach is...
- a unique collaborative program between the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education.
- one of only thirteen teacher education programs in the U.S. awarded a grant by the National Math and Science Initiative to model their program after UTeach, a highly successful math and science teacher preparation program at the University of Texas at Austin.
-
prepares outstanding secondary mathematics and science teachers ready to teach right after earning your Bachelor's degree.
-
a four-year program that leads to a degree in a mathematics or sciences major and a Colorado teaching license.
Getting Starting in CU Teach
- You begin by taking Step 1 (EDUC 2020) which is a 1-credit course that invites science and mathematics students to explore teaching as a career by providing first-hand experiences co-teaching science/math lessons in local elementary classrooms. Master teachers provide ongoing support and feedback.
- Meets weekly on CU campus (1.25 hours/week) and involves 5 additional visits to a local elementary school.
- After this course, you take Step 2 (EDUC 2030) which has a similar structure to Step 1, but in the context of middle school math or science teaching.
Coursework
- The CU Teach program is a four-year degree/licensure program that allows students to complete a rigorous education in a mathematics or science major and fulfill the requirements for a Colorado initial teaching license in Secondary Mathematics or Secondary Science.
- CU Teach courses will be phased in from Fall 2008 to Spring 2012. Freshman starting in Fall of 2008 will be able to complete the full CU Teach program in four years.
- Students who started their freshmen year at CU before Fall 2008 are not required to take the Step 1 and Step 2 courses; however, you are encouraged to take the Step courses and apply to the current Secondary Math and Science Teacher Education Programs.
- You will receive ongoing advising from CU Teach advisors and can participate in all CU Teach courses and other activities as they are phased in.
Support from Master Teachers
- Master teachers are CU Boulder faculty members who are veteran teachers of grades 6-12. They teach courses and coordinate/support real-life teaching experiences for CU Teach students. Master teachers mentor CU Teach students from their entrance into the program to post graduation and are accessible to the students as a consistent source of support.
Support from Mentor Teachers
- Mentor teachers are teachers currently teaching in K-12 schools who help CU Teach students with feedback on lesson planning, teaching strategies, classroom management and other important issues that teachers face in today’s classrooms.
Support from CU Teach Faculty
- Faculty members from both the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education work closely with CU Teach students. These faculty members all share an avid interest in K-12 education and discipline-specific educational research.
A Unique University Experience
- CU Teach students form a close community in which they can share experiences of college life through many special university resources devoted to them. The CU Teach student group, WeTeach, provides professional, academic, and social support for students in the CU Teach program. They continue to support each other after graduation through a network that is part of the CU Teach new teacher induction program.
Scholarship and Internship Opportunities
-
CU Teach students may be eligible for a number of scholarships including Americorps and Noyce Fellowship. In addition, they have opportunities to complete paid internships in local nonprofit science and mathematics organizations. For example, Science Discovery and the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation offers very attractive opportunities.
After Graduation
- CU Teach provides continued support for its graduates by offering face-to-face and/or online support through regularly scheduled professional development to help them overcome challenges in the classroom. This support extends through the School of Education's "Partners in Education" program and CU Teach.
