Thank you for your interest in recruiting Learning Assistants! Faculty can use this form to apply for the Fall 2008 semester. Learning assistants will be allocated to departments on the basis of competitively reviewed proposals.
Guidelines for proposals/participating faculty:
- Preference will be given to courses involving interactive engagement of students and collaborative learning in some way
- Course design must include plans for assessment of student learning
- Participating faculty must commit to meeting with LAs on a weekly basis
- Participating faculty must commit to attending approximately 3-4 group meetings with other participating faculty per semester and one intro workshop
- Faculty must work with LA program to assess development of skills in learning assistants
- Preference will be given to departments that commit additional resources to course transformation and the LA program
- Participating faculty should be committed to encouraging LAs to explore careers in mathematics and science K-12 teaching
- Non-required (optional) recitation session/workshops are NOT desirable uses for LAs
Guidelines for employment of Learning Assistants:
- LAs must be engaged in activities central to the instructional design
- Preferably should be employed in large-enrollment, introductory courses
- Preferably should be employed to facilitate collaboration amount small groups of students
- Should be employed in cadres of 5-10 LAs per department to form a supportive community
- Should be used to facilitate collaborative and/or inquiry-based learning
- Should be engaged in assessment of student learning
- Preference should be given to prospective LAs who demonstrate some interest in becoming K-12 teachers
